Basketball is one rare sport with a particular date of birth, which is December 1, 1891. It is an American invention (albeit founded by a Canadian physician in America.). The founder, Nai Smith's, five basic principles center on the ball, which was described as "large, light, and handled with the hands.” The ball is an inflated sphere.

Basketballs are available in various size ranges that vary from 28.5-30 inches (72-76 cm) in circumference, and from 510 to 624 grams in weight. For players at a junior level, a smaller ball is used, however the ball in men's games measures 29.5-30 in (75-76 cm) whereas in women's game ball is 28.5-29 in (72-74 cm) in circumference. The basketballs are available in various textures, depending on the covering of the ball. The most popular covering includes rubber, synthetic, leather or a combination of more than one material.

Orange is the regulation colour. Inflation of the basketball ball is relative to the height of the ball's bounce. Inside the outer covering, there is a rubber bladder which holds air. The basketball is required to be inflated up till a pressure that will enable it to rebound to a height of 49-54 inches (1.2-1.4 m) when it is dropped on a solid wooden floor from a starting height of 6 ft (1.80 m).
