How to buy the right Fishing Rod?

Length: The key to buying the right rod begins with understanding where you’d be fishing and what you’d be fishing for. The length of Fishing Rods is measured from the tip all the way to the end of the butt and usually ranges in length from about 4 - 14 feet.

If you are casting longer distances, larger rods are recommended and the ability to disassemble them into several pieces further facilitates easy transportation. They are also used in fly fishing and for heavier lures.

Shorter rods cast shorter distances and are typically used for lightweight lures. Shorter rods also allow you better manipulation when you are fighting with a fish.

Action: The point on the rod where it bends is the action of the rod. This measurement can range from Ultra Light all the way to Heavy. The lighter the action, the closer it bends to the butt of the rod and the heavier, the closer to the tip. Heavy action rods are best suitable to large fishes as the backbone would be stiffer than light action rods, which is suitable for smaller fishes.

Weight and Material: The weight of a rod tells you how much weight it can carry. It is measured either by the weight of the lure it is designed to cast or the pound test.

Typically, fishing rods are made of graphite, fibreglass, or a combination of both materials depending on the functionality and the kind of fishing you’d use it for.

Graphite rods are lighter and stiffer, but much more brittle than fibreglass rods and are usually more expensive than fibreglass rods.

Fibreglass rods are heavier but much more flexible than graphite rods. They are very difficult to break and also are usually the less expensive option when choosing a rod material.

Reel: Reels are either spinning or casting and correspond to different needs it caters to. For beginners, a pinning reel would be ideal. Though it provides less control, it usually guarantees a greater success rate. They tend to work better with lighter lures and baits and less likely to get tangled.

A casting reel is meant for more experienced users allowing a greater degree of control and helps in aiming accurately when casting. They are suitable for artificial baits that are heavier in nature.
